Something looser.<br/><br/>I hoped to make an album for “everyone” but in the end I made an album for me. <br/><br/>I hope you will consider purchasing it. It’s an album where I put my youth to bed in a way. The notes are D E A F (spelling the word “deaf”, clearly) and the rhythm is Morse Code for D E A F (again, spelling deaf.) src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5165/5364354175_fce1f0593c.jpg"/></p> <p class="MsoNormal">It’s been a while since I purchased a CD in a shop with a person behind a till. <span> </span>I recently did such a thing and chose to give my money to the only music shop within walking distance of my house – a HMV.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">It was a new experience.<span> </span>Firstly new CD’s are difficult to find.<span> </span>Cross the threshold of my local HMV and the first thing you’ll see are bargain DVD box sets with crude marker signage.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">To my immediate right are CD’s of “old” releases on offer – 3 for 2 – grouped by the back catalogue of the individual artist.<span> </span>If there was something here that appealed to me I already had it.<span> </span>I moved on.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">I walked the aisles passing posters, mugs, games, DVD’s, “old” CD’s, gadgets and headphones.<span> </span>Just as I felt lost I spotted the new music section – a lonely shelf in the middle of the far wall four CD’s wide.<span> </span>I made a move, grabbed what I wanted and went to the exit.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">This is when I found the most telling thing of all about the current state of HMV</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-81_YJVonwHc/TTPePik8ktI/AAAAAAAACH0/cOA9Ml9ePtg/s1600/Decibel_meter_diagonal.jpg" height="512" width="524"/> </p> <p class="MsoNormal">There was a decibel meter above the door so that they can’t play their music to loud.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Hardcopy media sales are down but surely if HMV are to survive what they sell and the space they sell it in has to embody the spirit of Rock n Roll?<span> </span>Youth, noise – cool shit?<span> </span>Decibel meter.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span> <p>While finishing my spring cleaning I dug out a box of cassettes where-in I discovered a recording I made when I was, I don’t know - twelve (?) probably.</p> <p>It’s music made using the Modern Music Maker that came packaged with the Terminator 2 cartridge for the Commodore 64. Friday<p>This week…</p> <p>I listen to some crap songs</p> <p>I play with my sample bank</p> <p>…we begin</p> <p><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5165/5364354175_fce1f0593c.jpg"/></p> <p>The problem with formulas is that anyone can learn them.<br/><br/> I discovered two songs this week in quick succession – Friday by Rebecca Black (you can find it burning up YouTube <a title="here" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD2LRROpph0">here</a>) and Price Tag by Jessie J featuring B.o.B. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMxX-QOV9tI">(here</a>)</p> <p>These songs have both been written to the same metric with (approximately) the same tools. It was nice to hear them near on top of each other. They may as well be the same.</p> <p>Now; Friday is awful, I mean Jesus - but it was a present to a little girl from her parents. </p> <p>Kid wanted a pop song, kid got a pop song. As far as I’m concerned it’s a lovely gift for a parent to give a kid and the production house Ark Music Factory did a fine job of giving her a by-the-numbers - professional standard - track.</p> <p>I think the problem (and the cause for such upset) is they did such a good job they hit to close to home. Stupid lyrics performed with strict sincerity? Check. Auto tune? Check. Rapper on the bridge? Check. (etc.)</p> <p>Friday’s on iTunes now. I continue this reminiscence here.</p> <p>Postgate was a great home industrialist. His television shows were essentially hand made - stop motion cardboard with a homemade film clicker.</p> <p>I used to watch them in syndication on The Children’s Channel. I only found out recently how few episodes of his various shows were produced so what I watched I must have seen many many times. I think I appreciate them now more than I did then but they still managed to carve out their own bit of space inside my head.</p> <p>The music of Postgate’s “Smallfilms” was chiefly performed by Vernon Elliot. When I decided to see who each of the artists were (with the handy caption on the bottom of the TV screen) - I was delighted to discover these songs were all from one band and one album: The Colour and the Shape.</p> <p>It was bought and listened to a lot. Happy Major Power Chords. My core personality can be summed up by Happy Major Power Chords. Happy Major Power Chords resonate with my soul and tell me all is right with the world!<br/><br/> A friend spotted the Colour and the Shape next to my CD player and said “oh you like Foo Fighters – have you heard their first record?” My response: “There’s another record?!?!”<br/><br/> Then the Dave Grould mystique was laid out for me in the good old fashioned pre-internet way. Drummer from Nirvana – played all the instruments but gave his friends credit via photos, other drummer was no good…<br/><br/> I got one more good album out of them before they turned into Nickleback clones and got quite boring. Or maybe I just grew up and out grew them.</p> <p>Either way - this week I saw the video to the their new track <a title="Whtie limo" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebJ2brErERQ">WHITE LIMO</a> and it rekindled a spark of youth. It’s fun, bounchy and has an energy I can feed on!<br/> Yes! I am awake for I have listened to White Limo and am now ready to<br/> move very fast and do things!
